Violence to Staff in the Retail Sector
The British Retail Consortium’s annual crime survey has revealed that in the last four years violent crime against retail staff has doubled.
The figures for 2004-2005 include both verbal as well as physical abuse and both sets show a worrying upward trend.
Health and Safety at Work legislation requires employers to protect their employees whilst at work. This general duty extends to include protecting employees from violence. The British Retail Council are looking to raise awareness of the problem and are looking for support from both the Home Office and the Police in tackling what they believe is a society problem not just affecting the retail sector. They believe that general lack of respect, aggression, drug and alcohol abuse are contributing to the increasing attacks.
Where the employer recognises the potential for violence in the risk assessment, as with all assessments, adequate control measures need to be implemented.
