World Cup 2006

Although it may seem some time away, the World Cup takes place this year, starting in June. Because of the time similarity between the UK and Germany, where the tournament is being held, the matches take place in the afternoon and evening our time and therefore are likely to be during some peoples working time!

Employers should be aware that for England’s first match on 10th June 2006, when they play Paraguay, this match takes place at 2.00 pm. UK time, and there is the possibility, however slight, that some employees may try to call in sick on that day, or simply not turn up for work, so that they can watch the match at home on television.

As with all potential trouble spots in the workplace, it is much better to have a policy, of which your employees are reminded at suitable times, and the World Cup is one. Options you could consider include:

making sure that if employees want time off, they take it as part of their annual leave;
allowing staff to watch matches and make up time lost over the following few days; or
you may even wish to consider allowing staff to have an extended lunch break or bring a large screen TV into the workplace. If you choose this option, bear in mind that with breaks etc, the game could stretch to well over two hours!

All in all you do have the right to ensure that your business continues to run effectively. If everybody knows at the outset what the position is, they can make plans accordingly and they have no excuses for doing otherwise.
